# VIC Electrical Safety Check (/docs/form-guides/electrical/vic/vic-electrical-safety-check-report)



This guide covers the Energy Safe Victoria **Electrical Safety Check - Report** for residential tenancies. Use it to record the parts checked, test results, observations, and the licensed electrician's certification.

## Before you start [#before-you-start]

* Have the property address and previous check date, if known.
* Confirm the inspection and testing scope required for the tenancy.
* Have RCD test results, smoke alarm findings, observations, and electrician details ready.
* Check [Energy Safe Victoria's current residential tenancy guidance](https://www.energysafe.vic.gov.au/industry-guidance/electrical/electricians-toolkit/residential-tenancy). The current guidance refers to section 4 of AS/NZS 3019:2022.

Energy Safe Victoria's current guidance says residential tenancy electrical installations and fittings must be checked every **2 years** by a licensed electrician. Smoke alarms have their own inspection and testing interval, so record the next smoke alarm check due date separately.

## Installation Address [#installation-address]

Search for the property address, then add the date of the previous safety check if there was one.

## Extent of the Installation [#extent-of-the-installation]

Tick each part of the installation included in this safety check. Record the scope and limitations clearly so the recipient can see what was and was not checked.

Tick the items included in the visual inspection. Record any defects or recommendations later in Observations.

Tick the items tested for polarity and correct connections.

Record the circuit protected, the push button result, and the time test result for each RCD row. Use the extra rows for other circuits.

## Smoke Alarms [#smoke-alarms]

Confirm whether all smoke alarms are correctly installed and working. Add the next smoke alarm check due date.

Record any observations and recommendations for action. Keep the wording clear for the person receiving the report.

## Certification [#certification]

Add the licensed electrician's name, licence or registration number, inspection dates, and signature. Check the completed PDF before you issue it.

## After download [#after-download]

* Check the property, inspection scope, test results, observations, electrician details, and all dates.
* Confirm every defect or recommended action is clear to the rental provider.
* Preview the full report and make sure RCD rows and observations are readable.
* Give the written report to the rental provider or the person who requested the check.
* Keep the report with the job record.
* Record repairs needed and action taken. Energy Safe Victoria says a Certificate of Electrical Safety must be issued when electrical repair or maintenance work is carried out.

This report records the safety check. It is not a Certificate of Electrical Safety for electrical installation work.
